Membership in the National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, is one of the highest honors bestowed in the field of medicine. Membership is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science and is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive. The Adam Yarmolinsky Medal will be awarded to a member of the National Academy of Medicine from a discipline outside of the health and medical sciences - for example, from fields such as the social and behavioral sciences, law, public policy, and administration.

New members are elected by current members through a process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health. Membership: NAS membership is achieved by election, and there is no membership application process.
